U.S. Coast Guard Buys NavLink, August 1997

August 20, 1997

The U.S. Coast Guard has made an initial purchase of NavLink shipboard and cockpit units for evaluation and use by USCGC Polar Star operating in Antarctica.

NavLink is an HF radio based position exchange and reporting system specifically designed for operation in shipborne helicopters. Using on-board GPS for position data, NavLink periodically transfers location messages to other NavLink platforms in a net, allowing bearing and distance between platforms to be displayed. The system also has the ability to send and receive preprogrammed messages. Performance over water has proven reliable at ranges up to 200 nautical miles.

NavLink has been in use by the Canadian Coast Guard for over six years. Approximately 80 units have been installed.
