Square Peg Communications Developing BGAN Micro-SAS Channel Units

April 5, 2007

The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded a contract to develop Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) to a consortium that includes Inmarsat, Square Peg Communications Inc. (SPCI), EMS, Logical CMG , GateHouse and Livewire Digital.

As part of a phased development extending the Inmarsat Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) protocols, the project will lead to a compact Satellite Access Station (Micro-SAS) offering unicast and multicast services to a population of multicast enabled BGAN terminals operating over leased capacity.

Square Peg is responsible for the implementation of the Channel Unit Subsystem (CUS) and RF Subsystem (RFS) components of the Micro-SAS. This implementation will be based on the Multi-Channel Platform (MCP) hardware and software developed with the Canadian Space Agency. The MCP provides a powerful, scaleable, and highly reliable platform suitable for use in a wide variety of satcom infrastructure applications. Its high performance benefits satellite operators and service providers by supporting the increasingly sophisticated signal processing required to maximize the efficiency of the satellite channel while it provides significant cost and size reductions for less signal processing intensive applications.

IP-Multicast over satellite has many key markets including the government, defence and maritime sectors. Key applications include netted voice (push to talk net radio), situational awareness systems and netted data services such as collaborative tools and secure reliable multicast file delivery service.
